Signing a PDF: visible signatures and digital signatures are not the same
“Sign PDF digitally” can describe very different technical and legal processes. First determine whether the document needs a visible mark or evidence based on identity and document integrity.
Sign a PDF locallyVisible signature image
A drawn, typed or uploaded signature can be placed as a graphic on a PDF page. It displays a signature but does not by itself contain a digital certificate or cryptographic identity proof.
Certificate-based digital signature
A cryptographic PDF signature can reveal changes made after signing and can include certificate information. Its evidential value depends on identity checks, certificate chain and process.
Advanced and qualified signatures
Regulated transactions may impose specific requirements. A qualified electronic signature requires an appropriate qualified trust service and cannot be replaced by inserting a signature image.
Using a simple PDF signer carefully
Work with a copy, verify the target page and retain the received version. Editing a PDF that already has a cryptographic signature may invalidate that signature.
