Using QR codes well: content, print and scanability

Creating a QR code is easy. Reliable everyday use depends on content, contrast, size, quiet zone and testing on real devices.

Choose the right content

Use URLs for websites and menus, Wi-Fi codes for access, vCards for contacts, and email or phone codes for direct actions. Include only the data the destination needs.

Static means fixed

A static QR code stores its data in the pattern. The content cannot be swapped after printing, so maintain and test a URL before publishing it.

Design for print

Keep strong contrast, an undisturbed quiet zone and enough physical size for the intended scanning distance. Decorative backgrounds and tiny patterns increase scan risk.

Test before publishing

Scan the finished code with more than one device and from the expected distance. Also verify that the URL, Wi-Fi access or contact details are still correct.
